- The term clenching means clamping your top and bottom teeth tightly together, especially your back teeth. Bruxism means clenching or grinding teeth, commonly at night. The stressful force of clenching teeth causes pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around your jaw. This can lead to jaw joint disorder, jaw pain, soreness, headache, earache, damaged teeth and much more, which can be referred to as TMD (temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction). Treatment: - Occlusal splints are worn to prevent any damage to teeth due to clenching and grinding. - You may need referral to a specialist / medical GP for treating stress or anxiety as this is a common cause of bruxing.
